A Welcome Message from the Editor-in-Chief, 11-03-2015

WOW! Thank you so much for your support of the mission of the Awesome Sports Project! I am not sure any of us really expected 1,000 views in the first couple of days of the launch! Thank you! Please keep sharing our stories with your families and friends!

“Maybe we are strange. Maybe we are fanatics. I’ve certainly been called crazy, insane, obsessed.”

This week, our two athletes take us from the state of Washington to Mexico to Lisbon, always with a soccer ball at their feet or a softball game calling them home. Growing up, I too I thought I was an odd-duck–and I was certainly made to feel as such–when I preferred to spend my nights in the YMCA playing basketball with sweaty middle-aged men rather than go to the movies with my friends. I, like Haley, had made my parents give up on vacations so I can spend time on the court with my other family, my other friends–those girls with whom I would walk through fire. And like Elizabeth did with her soccer ball, I once brought deflated a basketball and brought it to England and I dribbled for half an hour each morning before anyone else woke up.

Maybe we are strange. Maybe we are fanatics. I’ve certainly been called crazy, insane, obsessed. But every day, I am discovering more and more people like me out there, more and more girls and women whose lives are tied to the sports that had given them a voice and an identity.

Thank you for being a part of our awesome project!
